About

ArtAncient is a London-based gallery specialising in exceptional objects spanning from the formation of the Solar System to late antiquity.

The gallery is known for its research-led discoveries and acquisitions, many of which are now held in museums worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Zayed National Museum.

ArtAncient regularly publishes research online and in catalogues, and has contributed to and worked with leading research institutions, such as the J. Paul Getty Museum’s APPEAR Project, the Fitzwilliam Museum’s Hamilton Kerr Institute and the Courtauld Institute.

We also regularly exhibit at vetted international art fairs, such as Frieze Masters, TEFAF Maastricht, Masterpiece and BRAFA.

Our London gallery is open by appointment. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Approach

ArtAncient places strong emphasis on research, including provenance and the art historical context of the objects it handles. We seek to offer exceptional works that can be responsibly placed in institutional and private collections.

We assess each object individually, taking into account factors including quality, known collecting history, publication and exhibition history and scientific analysis. Particular weight is given to objects that were outside their probable countries of origin prior to the 1970 UNESCO Convention, or prior to the introduction of national restrictions on the export and trade of antiquities, as well as to objects with surviving export or regularising documentation.

Our due diligence has led to the recovery of important provenance histories and, where appropriate, the identification and repatriation of objects to their countries of origin and rightful owners.
